SOMEWHERE OVER THE course of the night, the adrenaline had turned to dust in my blood, and all my anger had evaporated into cold. My eyes hadn’t closed, and my mind had refused to stop turning everything over and over, unable to let it lie.

I knew she would come for me eventually. Somewhere between all the tears and the brokenness, a strange self-assuredness had found me. Scarlett had saved me. She’d kissed me, touched me, lied for me, and left me here. I had tasted her feelings for me through the tenuous connection we sometimes shared. Shivering against the wall, as the cold and exhaustion replaced the terror and the regret, finally, I had convinced myself that for reasons unknown, I meant something to her.

I held the knowledge tight around myself as a girl a few years older than me summoned me from my place atop the stairs, leading me wordlessly back through the room I had run through the night before. I held some appeal for Scarlett. Her performance in front of the elevator, her callousness as she placed the gun on the table, the brands on Joseph’s chest—they had taught me to be careful, wary, not to trust exactly how much. But she had saved me, and she was making an effort to keep me, and with nothing else left, I was determined to use that advantage. I couldn’t bear another night on the fifteenth floor. If she cared about me at all, she wouldn’t force me to. There had to be another way.

The thoughts broiled below the surface as I followed the girl’s dark head out of the elevator, hardly noticing the subtle change in décor that transitioned from business to home, just barely. The floor was still granite, large square tiles of the stuff, smooth below my dirty sneakers, though the walls were a rich shade of cream, windows at either end of the long hall pouring light into the space. As we walked, I caught flashes of a life: a large kitchen through one door, a glossy black grand piano through another, a bedroom with a worn tribal rug and a high bookcase. This was where she lived.

We stopped abruptly outside a door, where the nameless girl knocked twice and then spoke for the first time since she had found me on the stairs. “You’re to go inside and wait in the bedroom, Mistress will see you when she’s ready.”

She arched one eyebrow as she gave Scarlett the title it seemed she demanded from everyone here, disdain heavy in her dark eyes. She turned to leave, changing her mind at the last minute. “Want some advice, kid?”

I could only have been a few years younger than her by my estimation, though my eyebrows rose automatically in response, questioning.

“Don’t fight her, the sick bitch likes it.”

I watched as she walked away, numb. All the resolve I had built up through the night splintered. How many more were there? Aria, this new angry girl, me… Scarlett’s pets, her playthings.
